"The affected area will reopen once water quality data indicate that bacteria levels are once again suitable for shellfish harvesting." Mike Marshall, who manages the Shellfish Sanitation Section at the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, said that in an Oct. 5, 2026 SCDES release. The release closed every shellfish bed from Anderson Creek and southern Bulls Bay down to Charleston Harbor. That stretch covers most of the tidal water you can see from Mount Pleasant's eastern side.
The 2026–27 recreational oyster and clam season had opened four days earlier. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources announced that harvest would open half an hour before official sunrise on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, and run through May 15, 2027, subject to change for conditions. "Subject to change" covers a lot. Around Mount Pleasant, the printed season tells you the earliest and latest dates you could harvest. Whether a given creek is open on a given Saturday depends on how much rain fell that week.
The closure started at official sunset on Oct. 5. SCDES reopened the beds on Oct. 14, saying in its reopening notice that bacteria levels were "once again suitable for shellfish harvesting." The season was 13 days old, and the waters off Mount Pleasant had been closed for nine of them.
The two notices describe the area in agency terms: Shellfish Management Areas 08 and 9A. SCDES's own area reports list the creeks, and most of them are within a short drive of Coleman Boulevard or Rifle Range Road.
| SCDES area | Waters it includes | Oct. 5–14, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Area 08 | Copahee Sound, Hamlin Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway, Anderson Creek | Closed to all harvest |
| Area 9A | The Intracoastal Waterway and Conch, Hamlin, Inlet and Swinton creeks, from near Morgan Creek to Charleston Harbor, including the Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms shoreline and Sullivan Island Narrows Creek | Closed to all harvest |
| Area 9B | The Wando River and its tributaries | Not part of this closure |
The table shows how Mount Pleasant splits. Hamlin Creek, Inlet Creek and the Narrows behind Sullivan's Island are in the areas the October rain closed. The Wando side of town is managed as a separate area. The Wando has its own complications, though. On SCDNR's Bulls Bay to Charleston map page, state grounds S-238 Wando River and S-248 Upper Wando River are both marked partially closed by SCDES, along with S-272 North Sewee Bay.
SCDES publishes a management report for each area. Its September 2025 reports for Area 08 and Area 9A give the same trigger for both. A precautionary closure follows more than 4.00 inches of rain in 24 hours, as measured by the National Weather Service's Southeastern River Forecast Center. According to the Area 08 report, the agency's rainfall program sends staff daily rain totals in real time and alerts them when a closure threshold is crossed.
Reopening has no fixed timeline. On its shellfish program page, SCDES says it takes extra bacteria samples after conditional and precautionary closures. The October beds reopened when those samples came back clean.
The 2025 reports show how long that can take. On Dec. 18, 2023, a nor'easter dropped 7.68 inches on Area 08 in 24 hours and 4.25 inches on Area 9A, and both areas closed. In 9A, the closure stayed in place because samples kept coming back poor, and both areas reopened on Jan. 5, 2024. Those 18 days ran straight through the holidays, the stretch when many families plan a backyard roast. One storm that week closed the season's busiest weeks.
The October 2026 closure ended faster, after nine days. Taken together, the two events give a rough sense of the range. One heavy rain can close these creeks for anywhere from about a week to most of a month, and the reopening date depends on lab results.
Rain closures affect more than people with a bucket and gloves. The Oct. 5 notice covered "all shellfish harvesting" in Areas 08 and 9A, which includes commercial harvest in those waters. SCDNR's commercial shellfish rules page says commercial harvest is allowed only on State Shellfish Grounds and Culture Permits, and that SCDES may temporarily close grounds when heavy rain raises coliform bacteria levels.
So the oysters at a Mount Pleasant roast come out of the same water-quality system as the ones you pick yourself. Commercial harvest stopped in Areas 08 and 9A for the same nine days. The October closure reached only the southern part of Bulls Bay, and the notice did not cover grounds outside those two areas.
Here is where local oysters are on the calendar this fall, based mostly on the Post and Courier's list of 70 oyster roasts for the 2026–27 season, which notes that it may be updated:
| When | Event | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturdays and Sundays, October through May | Weekend oyster roasts with Bull's Bay clusters from local purveyors | Art's Bar & Grill, 413 Coleman Blvd., Mount Pleasant | Market rate |
| Nov. 7 | Charleston Habitat for Humanity Oyster Roast & BBQ | Citadel Beach Club, Isle of Palms | $75 |
| Nov. 7 | Lonon Foundation's Shuck Fest | Isle of Palms Exchange Club | $75 |
| Nov. 8 | HALOS Shuckin' on the Harbor | Harborside East, Mount Pleasant | $75, or $70 early bird |
| Weekly through March | Islander 71 oyster roast series | 80 41st Ave., Isle of Palms | Details to come |
| Through March | Oysters at the Point | Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina, 20 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant | Details to come |
The roast list has a cause behind each event. Habitat's proceeds go to affordable housing in Charleston-area communities. HALOS supports relatives and friends who are raising children outside foster care. The Lonon Foundation serves children affected by a parent's or caregiver's cancer diagnosis or death. Art's posts roast details on its oyster roast page.
One more event is set for later in the season. The Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce is holding its Not Just an Oyster Roast holiday party on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cotton Dock at Boone Hall Plantation. Suggested donations are $75 for members and $90 for guests.
On Shem Creek, the town's Experience Mount Pleasant seafood trail lists two restaurants. NICO serves local oysters year-round, and Page's Okra Grill serves oysters from the ACE Basin. The ACE Basin is south of Charleston, well outside Areas 08 and 9A, so a rain closure in the creeks off Mount Pleasant doesn't automatically take those oysters off the menu.
For anyone planning to harvest from Hamlin Creek or the Narrows, the season dates are only the first check. Here is a sequence that follows how the two agencies split the work:
This is general information drawn from SCDNR and SCDES, not legal advice. Before you harvest, confirm the current rules and closures for your ground directly with those agencies.
After a wet week, the Wando grounds may still be open because they're managed separately, though parts of them are already marked partially closed. The roast tables on Coleman Boulevard and at Harborside East depend on the same rain gauges and water samples. The season runs through May 15, 2027, unless the weather closes the beds first.
Knowing which creek is in which management area is the same kind of detail that matters when you're comparing homes along Hamlin Creek with homes on the Wando side of town.
